Each year, 110 million cards are sent on Father’s Day. While dads value and appreciate these warm wishes, they may be less likely to express how they really feel and what they really need—especially as they age.
Typically, men don’t ask for directions, let alone for help when they need it. So when dad’s health is declining, he may resist telling you. He may be afraid of sounding frail, of being a burden or of losing his independence.
Since Dad may not let on that he’s struggling with daily tasks and activities or having other difficulties, look for signs that he may need help. These may include:
- Poor grooming (stains on clothes, infrequent bathing)
- Changes in eating habits (one meal a day, snacks instead of nutritious meals)
- Sudden mood changes (anger, suspicion, paranoia)
- Reluctance to socialize
- Depression (not sleeping, not eating and no energy)
- Poor or decreased judgment (burners left on, doors unlocked)
- Loss of initiative or lack of interest in activities (stops participating in social, - church or volunteer groups)
- Increased forgetfulness (missed doctor appointments or family events)
- Difficulty walking or frequent falls
- Mishandling finances or medications (not paying bills, not taking prescribed medicine or not taking the correct dose)
- An unsafe home environment (cluttered pathways, loose rugs, poor lighting)
Take some time for him.
Hope you'll do the needful
